Why do nearly all animals have to close their eyes when they sleep? And why not their ears too?

We use a base-10 numerical system "because we have 10 digits." But because there are 11 numbers in the inclusive set of 0 to 10, why doesn't it make more sense to naturally use a base-11 system?
