Was Hitler aware that two thousand years prior the barbarians were the Germanic peoples fighting against Civilization? How did he fit this into his racial narrative?

I recall my history professor saying that much of the Prussian military elite held Hitler in contempt because he was "Austrian Riff-Raff". Does anyone know of documented sources of Hitler being disparaged because of his origins?
