What was the closest any person was distance wise to ground zero when either of the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, and they subsequently survived without immediate major ill effects? By immediate major ill effects, I mean acute radiation poisoning, bad burns, etc. Not cancer 30 years later.

I was watching a documentary on WWII Japanese guns, and they mentioned that after Japan surrendered, the US took the guns from both the military, AND private citizens. Is this true?

Did Civil War soldiers have any way to purify the water they would get from rivers and streams? If not, I assume dysentery ran rampant. And if it did, would a soldier be left behind to recover in a hospital, and then catch up to the army when well?

I know that Nero slaughtered Christians because they were Christian (which as I understand were viewed almost as a cult in Rome at the time of Nero), but what religion, if any, was Nero?
