French Huguenot Protestants were viciously persecuted by Catholics in 16th-17th century France. A century later during t French Revolution, vicious anti-clericalism incited the French to seize and deface Church property and massacre thousands of priests. Did anyone reflect on this/see it as ironic?

The Plague of Justinian in the 6th century seems associated with the Eastern Mediterranean but I’ve read it also reached Northwestern Europe as far as Britain and may have been deadlier than the 14th century plague. Is this true and if so what is known about it?

There seem to be many instances in the 5th century AD during the fall of the Western Roman Empire of slaves deserting en masse to join the "barbarians" (Goths, Vandals, etc.) and being accepted into their ranks. Was lots of slaves deserting to the join an enemy common in earlier times as well?

Why did the military shako become so popular in the first half of the 19th century when it seems much less comfortable and practical than both the tricorne that preceded it and kepi/pith helmet, etc., that came after?

The "common knowledge" explanation of what caused Viking invasions is that they were seasonal farmers who got bored during long Scandinavian winters, but that doesn't seem like it makes sense given the massive scale and colonizing goal. Why were they so aggressive and desperate for new territory?
