When high school physics problem say "ignoring friction" or "assume no friction" for (any non-vertical) distance traveled questions, are we also assuming a vacuum?

If a ship or something capsizes, creating a pocket of air within the vessel and water underneath it, would someone breathing in that air permanently remove oxygen from the air pocket?

We have different scales for weight (kg/lb), temperature (°F/°C/K), length (ft/m), volume (L/gal), angles (deg/rad) etc. But why don't we have different scales for time?
