[Question about the Cold War] I was told once by my teacher that the groups that the U.S. propped up in proxy wars were mainly puppets and mercenaries, whereas Communist-allied groups tended to be much more home-grown and autonomous. How true is this?

In 1939, Max Naumann, the leader of a Nazi-supporting Jewish organization that was previously condemned to a concentration camp, was released. Why was he released specifically, if we know? Was it at all common to be released from a death camp?
