When reading about the battle of Dunkirk, I always see authors say "they may have saved 300k men but they left all their heavy equipment in France". While clearly true, where does this repetitive flourish originate? Are there more in depth modern analyses of Dunkirk and its strategic implications?

I just discovered my great-grandfather was First officer on SS Trident, in convoy SC7 in October 1940, where 20 of 35 ships, 79,000 tonnes, were sunk by U-boats. If Germany had had such success against all convoys, how quickly might Britain have collapsed in the Second World War?
