I’ve heard that “made in Japan” used to be a shorthand for cheap, crappy products the way “made in China” is today. Is this true? If so, how did American perception of Japanese manufactured goods change so much since then?

In the West, we tend to think of zebras as “stripy horses.” Are there any records of how African cultures accustomed to zebras first reacted to horses? Did they see them as monochrome zebras?
