Just finished reading Jonathan Roth's "The Logistics of the Roman Army at War." I'm impressed at the sophistication of logistical systems; way more effective than in the Medical Ages. Was there another premodern civilization that had better military logistics (e.g. Chinese, or the Islamic World)?

How were labors divided between soldiers and camp followers in Roman armies? Did this change significantly for Medieval armies?
