Has the idea of differences in fashionablenesss based on age always existed? For example, would a 25-year-old French count in the 1770s have dressed differently from a 50-year-old count at the same time and place?

It seems to me that 1980's Hollywood reflects a strong nostalgia for the 1930s (especially 30's gangsters; see examples inside)? Was 30's nostalgia a real trend at the time, or am I falling prey to confirmation bias? If it was, what prompted it? The half century mark, or something else?
