Both the Byzantine Empire in 1300 & the Ottoman Empire a few decades later in 1370 shared a similar geographic area of Thrace & Western Anatolia. However, the Byzantines seemed to be terminal decline, while the Ottomans went on to conquer the Eastern Mediterranean. What accounts for the difference?
