I've heard that in some places during the middle ages, there was a knight with a castle for every village, meaning for every ~300 people in a kingdom, there was a Knight, and a castle. Is this true?

Before the introduction/invention of mail, what did germanic and celtic people use as armor? Did they use armor at all, besides shields?

I've often heard that two-handed swords and similar weapons didn't really appear on the European battlefields before the development of plate armor, because shields became less important. What about the dane axe then?
