Can anyone explain why gravity attracts things without using the ball in a curved well analogy? As this to me is like using a word in it's own definition.

Somebody once told me I can move a ship by myself. If I just lean against a massive ship in harbour for long enough, eventually the "sustained energy input" will push it away from the dock like it was under power, is this true?
