Why don't we shove the sand of the Sahara desert down in the ocean and recolonize/regrow the land? Are there other problems than the sand itself?

Can water absorbed by the body only be utilized by reaching the stomach? E.g. if a severely dehydrated person drinks water, is the water absorbed by the walls of the mouth/throat on the way down "lost"?
