I'm fascinated with the parliamentary dealing of the UK in the period 1688-1815, especially how the Tory/Whig factions developed and the various Great Men (Walpole, Pitt, etc.). What would be good, entry level reading to get an overview?

I've read through a lot of this sub, but I have yet to get a completely satisfactory answer: how distinct was Nova Scotia from the 13 colonies in 1770? Was it solely British naval strength? Was it included in the Navigation Acts (etc.)?
