The death toll for Chernobyl ranges wildly, from a few hundred to tens of thousands. Which numbers are the most believable and why? Furthermore, why is it so hard to establish a concrete number for the disaster?

After WW1 Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania became independent, democratic republics. All three turned into authoritarian dictatorships in the 1930s and had underground fascist movement that they... suppressed? How come? And how come they all had such similar political paths? What was going on here?

In Antiquity, highly centralised governments and huge standing armies were quite prominent, while during the Middle Ages, states were very decentralised and armies were small. What caused this Devolution and why did it evolve back into highly centralized systems and standing armies again?
