Were there any attempts to create a third power block in the German Confederation of pre-unification 19th century Germany, opposed to both Prussia and Austria, and composed of the other German states, most notably Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, Saxony and Hannover?

Why was Japan the only (East) Asian country that managed to adequately modernize ("westernize") and assert its sovereignty against the Western Imperial powers of the day? Why were Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, etc... unable to do the same?

Why did the Western Roman Empire fall? Throughout my life I have heard all sorts of reasons, ranging from economics to politics to "cultural decline" and "barbaric jnvasions" to repeat military failures and lastly climate change. So why did it fall?

The Confederacy during the US Civil War was hopelessly outgunned and outmanned. How then did they manage to hold on for 5 years, and did they ever have a real chance at achieving at least a peace confirming their independence, or was the war lost from the start?
