What's so different about Catalonias culture and history compared to Spains, that it wants Independence?

The imperial Chinese bureauceacy is famous for its merit based examinations. But reading up on it, it seems that those exams were mainly about literary analysis of confucian literature. Why? Being knowledgable about confucian literature does not help someone in his job as a civil servant.

A common concept in strategy games where you build up a nation is "Golden Ages" (Think "Civ" or "EU4"). Like the reign of Louis XIV being seen as a "Golden Age" for France. Does this concept exist in real life and what could be seen as the "Golden Age" for Germany?

The Germans had the "doctrine" of Blitzkrieg or Maneuever Warfare, the Soviets had the doctrine of Deep Battle. What about the other nations in WW2? Did they have certain general concepts or doctrines on how to fight a war? The French, British, Americans, Japanese, etc...

As a European I have little knowledge on the short-lived independent Republic of Texas. Did the Republic seek annexation by the US from the start or were there serious plans of permanent independence from both the US and Mexico?

In light of the Mexican-American war, for less than a month Californian-American rebels proclaimed an independent "Bear Republic", which was quickly annexed by the US. Did any of the rebels have the intention of staying independent of the US, or did they always intent to become a part of the US?
