Calypso has long had music with strong, overt political messages like Attila's "The Commissioner's Report" or "Money Is King" by Growling Tiger. Harry Belafonte might have made it tropical with Jamaican-inspired tunes, but why has it never taken off the same way reggae has as political songs?

MacArthur is famous for having returned to the Philippines in WWII. Was liberating the Philippines strategically useful for the Allies? Or once Japan's naval threat was eliminated after Leyte Gulf did it prove an ultimately unnecessary campaign in the war (and hence mostly forgotten)?
