The public perception of the medieval ruling system often seems to be as king>duke>count>baron. But when one look at actual medieval realms, this does not seem to be the case. In the Holy Ronan Empire, you have duke, princes, counts, barons, lords and even knights as direct vasalls to the Emperor.

I'm just watching the film "The Talk of the Town" (1942) starring Cary Grant. One of the characters, law professor Michael Lightcap, portrayed by Ronald Colman, has his own driver and servant. Was it common for a professor in the 1940s to have a own driver and servant?
