I'm a Chinese person in the 90's, the economy is booming, Communist party connections are (presumably) great to have, but there are eight "minor parties" with no real power. Why would I join one of these? What would it get me?

Why was the Shining Path militant organisation of Peru so effective in it's insurgency in the nineties? I get the impression that it didn't have widespread popular support and resembled a cult in some ways, but it seems to have take control of much of the country at one point.

I'm an educated, upper class man living in the Roman Empire around the time Jesus was born, and I want to know what lies beyond the borders of the Empire. How much do I know about the lands of the barbarians? Do I know more about the East than, say, the far north of Europe, or sub-Saharan Africa?
