Many science fiction movies and TV shows have small fighter spaceships flying around in space. When they make a turn, they "lean into" the turn like planes on Earth. Since there is no atmosphere in space, would banking or leaning into a turn be necessary?

Have there ever been any positive examples of long-lasting colonialism where both the colony and it's mother country benefitted? Any examples of just the colony greatly benefitting?
