I've always wondered, if the External Tank on the Space Shuttle was jettisoned after the Shuttle had already achieved a stable preliminary orbit, how did it re-enter the atmosphere to burn up?

I don't know if this is a question of politics rather than science, but why is NASA spending so long developing the Ares V to be a HLV? Why can't they just pull the Saturn V out of retirement if they'll both cost similarly?

I can't seem to find any conclusive research: do we know the long term effects of amphetamine use, at therapeutic doses (IE for ADHD), on the brain and body?

Why is it possible for hydrogen atoms (in H2O) in current nuclear reactors to "absorb" neutrons, but not yet possible to fuse two hydrogen atoms together? What's the difference?
