I feel like growing up I've always heard that "video games will ruin your brain". Did people ever feel that way about people playing more "ancient" games like chess, checkers, etc?

Modern man often gazes in awe into a star-filled night sky. I believe modern people are "in awe" as we can somewhat grasp the the immensity of the Universe. Did pre-industrial people feel the same way while looking at the night sky? Even though they didn't understand what stars were?
