The Romans had aqueducts feeding many cities from many miles away. How did they keep the water wheels and intake spots maintained so they didn't break or intentionally destroyed?

It seems that pre-industrial cities must have reeked due to lack of modern sewer systems. Is there anything to indicate that those cities' inhabitants were "used to" this smell?

I spoke to an elderly gentleman today who said he was part of a bomber crew that flew about 100 miles over the border in Russia during the Korean War. He said "that's what kept them out". Is there any truth behind this?
