If I visited a medieval English town circa 1,000 A.D. with 1,200 inhabitants, how many shops would I find? Would they have a market square with lots of vendors? Would traveling merchants come through to hawk their wares?

How did Jerusalem have room for the thousands of Jews — from inside Isreal and abroad — who arrived at the capital? Massive tent cities outside the walls? Even in the Roman era the city was reliant on wells and imported much of its food, so how did they provide for the pilgrims?

Food at American restaurants before the 19th century was called, "abundant but not delicate." Foreign diners often commented on the vast quantities consumed and seemed to imply that Americans were gluttons. Was this a fair representation? Why/how were American eating habits different than European?
