Why did so much wealth accumulate in the Mediterranean's Renaissance trade hubs like Florence, Genoa, Venice, etc, when it apparently did not, to the same degree, in Classical trade hubs like Athens, Alexandria, Rome, etc?

The Indus-Sarasvati civilization had roads constructed in geometric patterns, large cities, and bronze tools, but apparently no temples or sacred places, and no iconography or prayer sculptures. Did they have no conception of or belief in god? Was this unusual? Did they "believe" in anything?

When US companies set up factories in Europe, how problematic have their lower work-life balance expectations been? Have there been clashes over the more intense "work ethic" expectations, the reduced vacation expectations, etc?
