Seneca was exiled to Corsica for eight years, yet he managed to write multiple letters, Stoic essays, and perhaps some of his very popular plays. Would Seneca have had a nice house? Books, paper, and writing equipment? Did he have any friends to talk to? What would his life have been like?

Today, governments are expected to relieve economic suffering and protect workers from abuse by their employers. Were there calls during the industrial revolution — to Queen Victoria, the US Congress, etc) — to relieve the suffering of poor workers in tenaments? Did they take much action to help?
