How did the hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, work in the medieval era? Would the average Muslim have had a better knowledge of geography than the average non-Muslim because of the necessity of knowing how to get to there?

I learned today of Harold Hering, a Major in the United States airforce missile crewman who was discharged in 1973 "for asking" whether the orders to launch a missile came from a sane president. Was Hering actually fired JUST for asking the question, or is this an oversimplification?
