The Qu'ran seems to assume the reader/listener is familiar with the stories of the Old Testament. How familiar would pagan Arabs have been with these stories, and how would they have heard them?

When declaring the old Arab goddesses Uzza, Manat and Al-Lat as nonexistent, the Qu'ran says that of the numerous angels none bear female names. This seems to imply that other traditional male deities might actually exist as angels. Was this position ever taken by Islamic theologians?
