In 1982, Hungary was the first country in the socialist bloc to restart securities market by issuing bonds of utility enterprises and government. How was this seen by other socialist countries? Was there any opposition within the Party against this move?

Chile's Christian Democratic Party was in alliance with left wing parties in the post Pinochet era and had also initially supported Allende in 1970. It seems to be much more left wing than Christian Democratic parties of Europe especially Germany. Why is this so?

In the early days of industrialization in Europe/US, artisanal producers and wage workers practiced extensive mutual aid and voluntary associations for tending to sickness, unemployment etc. Why did they dissapear into state services in later decades and never recreated?

Why did Syria under Hafeez al-Assad had poor relations with the US? Given that Syria participated in the first Gulf War with US led coalition why was there no rapprochement?
