There were a lot of radical left wing student movements in 1960's in different countries (France, Yugoslavia, West Germany, US, Mexico etc)? Why did they arise in 1960's in particular and never returned on the same scale in the ensuing decades?

Every Presidential election from 1952 till 2000 in US seems to have ended in decisive victory for the winning candidate in terms of Electoral College votes. Were the races as one sided as the result seem to indicate? If not, why weren't the victories more narrow?
