Before we started shaking our heads up/down for Yes and left/right for No, what signs did people use for saying Yes/No in a non-verbal way? When did we all started agreeing on the Up/Down - Left/Right?

Lots of documentaries about WW2 make an emphasis on the American aircraft carriers used against the Japanese. Has there ever been similar ships in the Atlantic at that time? If so, why don't we ever hear about it?
