How accurate is the image of the king/general leading the charge into battle during medieval warfare? If this did happen, how did the king survive? Was it just pure dumb luck or was there strategy to keeping the king alive in a charge?

So this video of Lars Anderson and explanation about all these misconceptions about archery has been circulating around. A lot of the video just says "He read the manuscripts and found _____ wasn't true." I am dubious of a lot of the claims. Can a historian separate what is and is not accurate?

In Lord of the Rings the men often hold hands, kiss each other's brow, express love, cradle another's head on their lap while they sleep... were these behaviors typical of Western men from Tolkien's time? Were men acting this way seen as atypical at the time of publication? What changed?
