Having a hand cut off for the crime of thievery seems to be a pretty common punishment throughout many periods. How deadly is this punishment?

The Mir Space Station was in orbit from 1986 to 1996 and housed both Soviet Union (and later) Russian astronauts and American Astronauts. Were there any political problems back on ground that caused problems with the astronauts on board? If so... how did they resolve these conflicts?

Where there any examples of weapons (throughout history before the 1800s) that were equivalent to our "nuclear" weapons of today, where people had them but thought it was just too destructive, or using it in war would just cause too much damage and thus avoided it?
