In 1927, the Supreme Court upheld a eugenic law passed by Virginia that allowed for, without trial, sterilization of people with “insanity, idiocy, imbecility, feeble-mindedness, or epilepsy.” By 1956, half of states had compulsory sterilization laws on the books.
