Did late medieval Englishmen know anything at all about the pagan beliefs of their Anglo-Saxon ancestors? Or did they only know about Roman paganism?

Britain has a variety of religious State schools; Anglican schools, Catholic schools, Jewish schools, Muslim schools, etc, all funded by the state and free for students. In the USA, all religious schools are private. Why did the systems develop differently?
