Was the Battle of the Milvian Bridge as pivotal in the Christianization of the Roman Empire as its made out to be? Wouldn't the empire's Christianization have continued anyway regardless of Constantine's victory?

As a general in an ancient or medieval army, how do I go about “choosing the field of battle”? Why would I accept a battlefield chosen by my enemy if it’s potentially disadvantageous to me? Why don’t I just “walk away” and wait for him somewhere else that would be more beneficial for me?
