How were castles sieged? It seems like a pretty hopeless battle if your enemy is up in a high, massively strong fortress made of stone. How could you possible win?

During the era in the USA of segregated bathrooms / train carriages etc, where the coloured facilities noticeably poorer? Or were they usually of equal quality to the white facilities?
