Why have so many culture in history (Romans, Aztecs, etc) been against their daughters flirting with boys?

How did the early empire Roman army deal with attacks on their soldier while on the march? The Marian mules had piles of stuff on them all day and half probably had to piss, so what stopped the enemy from just ambushing them while in this exposed state? Or are there stories of this happening?
