In Ancient Rome, children (maybe just boys?) wore a special pendant and a special purple rimmed tunic for both religious and secular reasons. My question is this: given how poor most people were back then, were all expected to be able to afford this for their child? Was this just a wealthy thing?

What was the 'American Dream' to Ancient Rome's (often vary poor) common folk? I doubt they were given a rosy promise of a good life after hard work, but their poverty is only poverty to us, and was 'normal' to them, thus, what kind of life did they (realistically) aspire for if all went well?
