What was pre-deployment training like for US Army & Marine units headed for Vietnam? Pre-deployment training- a “workup”- is a major piece of the modern US military experience, but it seems to be largely absent from historical accounts of the Vietnam War.

German operations in WW2 were distinguished by such doctrinal concepts as the schwerpunkt (focal point), kesselschlact (envelopment tactics), & auftragstaktik (decentralized command). What concepts characterized Japanese warfighting? Did the Italians have anything analogous to the German doctrine?
