Was there any significant political resistance to German reunification in the west? Germany had been broken up, for good reason, less than half a century earlier. Why were certain countries, such as France, so quick to accept it?

Would the average Roman citizen have had any particularly strong loyalty to the "Republic"? Did the average citizen pay it much mind when leaders began ruling for life?

In 1800, the (US) Federalists were defeated by the Anti-Federalists, creating the first peaceful transition of power between opposing ideologies in US history. Although this tradition seems to be taken for granted today, was there any talk about the Federalists refusing to step down in 1801?
