Are there any notable cases of high-ranking important military personnel, say a General or Colonel (or historical equivalent) having a mental breakdown during active command, due to trauma, combat stress etc.?

As a layman, I can see similarities between the end of the Roman Republic leading to the establishment Imperial Rome and the rise of the Nazi regime. Is there any bodies of work which explore this similarities? Has it the comparison been made before?
