Modern classics courses are dominated by the Iliad and the Odyssey. Did the ancient Greeks attach that much importance to them, or did they just happen to survive to the modern day when other works didn't?

Why did early Christianity spread so rapidly within the Roman Empire but wasn't as successful in other places? Was it simply because Rome was highly interconnected or were Romans especially easy to convert?
