Why did Washington expend any resources at all trying to protect Manhattan? He must have realized it was futile. Why didn't he just run and pick a better defensive location on the mainland?

In american colonial times, when a lomg distance traveler stopped at an Inn for the night, who would he get to take care of the horse(s)? What if he was just stopping at a tavern for a meal?

If the original portion of the western wall was only 1/2 the height of the current wall, and is a retaining wall built to expand the temple mount by King Harrod, does that mean that the location of the second temple is buried deep inside layers of dirt in the current Temple Mount?
