How was it that the Hindu-Arabic numerals quickly gained acceptance in societies using different number systems such as Europe and East Asia? How did they get over with replacing their traditional numbers with another number system?

Why lots of revolutions happened in 1980s? Velvet Revolution, Romanian Revolution, 8888 Uprising, Berlin Wall, Tiananmen Square. But even non-Communist countries are affected, such as S. Korea (June Uprising) and Philippines (Edsa Revolution)?

I saw a map on Wikipedia showing North Korea as not aligned with USSR and Communist China. Did North Korea really avoid aligning with USSR and China and if they are able to do this, how are they able to avoid aligning with the mentioned countries' influence?
