Why is there still so much hydrogen in the universe? It seems like it would have all been converted into heavier elements by stars by now.

So we just learned that the MERS virus is probably from Camels. The Bird Flu virus probably came from chickens. Are there any viruses that come from household pets? (e.g. cats, dogs, hampsters, snakes)
