When did witchcraft stop being an offense that met with corporeal or capital punishment in the majority of the Christian world? When did the majority of the laity stop perceiving it as a credible threat?

Did things like eisegesis, exegesis, etc., prevalent in transcribing religious texts by hand, carry over to the printing press? Did the speed of dissemination make it easier or harder to preserve the integrity of, say, Martin Luther's translation of the Bible?

In 1972, did local parishes or diocese of the Catholic Church have a policy for dealing with someone requesting an exorcism? What about after the release of The Exorcist? Was there a rise in exorcism requests? Did policy change to deal with it? Is there even an actual policy?
