One story from Holocaust deniers I've been seeing recently is that "There were no autopsies that showed Jews died from gas." Does this story have any veracity? Were autopsies done on holocaust victims? And if so, where did this story come from?

In the Age of Sail European explorers came across thousands of safe harbors to shelter in or explore from. But how did they find out crucial details for survival in a new land? Such as if the nearby plants were edible or if the locals were friendly? Did they just wing it?
